Frauenkirche, Rococo church in Günzburg, Bavaria, Germany

The Frauenkirche is a Rococo church built from 1736 by Dominikus Zimmermann, with a curved west facade, a high tiled hip roof and a 50-metre tower at the south choir corner whose square lower section survives from the Gothic predecessor. Its walls are white with pale pink pilasters, cornices and window surrounds; a wooden door with an arched top sits at the left. Inside, 16 columns carry a flat vault with Anton Enderle's 1741 fresco of the Coronation of Mary, framed by stucco scrollwork and gold ornament, with pinkish marble facing and a double nuns' gallery at the west end.

A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary is thought to have stood here around 1380; in 1433 a Franciscan convent was founded beside it and the chapel was enlarged in Gothic style. The great fire of 1735 destroyed the church, leaving only the lower part of the tower. From 1736 Dominikus Zimmermann rebuilt it in Rococo style; the nave and choir were finished by 1741, the altars and pulpit installed in 1757, and the church consecrated in 1780.

The church's name comes from its dedication to Mary, and the Loretan Litany symbols carved on the south and west portals by carpenter Hans Michael Baur of Offingen — the Ark of the Covenant, the Gate of Heaven, the Morning Star — refer to her. Since 1825 the Maria-Ward sisters, who bought the former Franciscan convent, have used the former nuns' gallery as their choir.

The church stands on the Frauenplatz in Günzburg's upper town, its west portal facing the square. The interior is entered at street level; the nave, choir raised by two steps, and west double gallery are all on the ground floor. The building was fully restored inside and out between 1998 and 2002.

The lower part of the 50-metre tower survives from the Gothic predecessor church destroyed in the 1735 fire; the Rococo rebuild by Dominikus Zimmermann followed from 1736. The west gallery, a double nuns' gallery on six marbled columns, was used as a choir by the Maria-Ward sisters after 1825.
