Grosser Teich Torgau, Artificial pond and fish farm in Torgau, Germany
Grosser Teich Torgau is an artificial fish pond covering about 175 hectares with water ranging from 1.5 to 2 meters deep. The surface is framed by reed beds, gentle shorelines, and surrounding meadows and strips of woodland.
Saxon rulers established this pond in 1483 and recorded harvests in the first year of over 7,000 carp and nearly 400 pike. Fish catches fed the royal kitchen and remained a major source of income for centuries.
This pond was once central to feeding the electoral court's tables and still shapes how local people see their landscape today. Visitors can sense these historical ties to royal life all around the shoreline.
The pond is circled by three walking routes, with the shortest around 8 kilometers and the longest reaching 20 kilometers. Wear good shoes and bring time to pause at quiet spots along the way.
The pond hosts over 100 bird species and ranks among Europe's protected bird sanctuaries. If you look carefully, you can spot reed warblers, swans, and coots living in their natural home.
