Stockau Castle was a four-story structure built from brick and wood that sat directly beside the Gersprenz River and featured spacious grounds. These gardens blended French, Dutch, and English design traditions into a single composition.
The estate was built in 1699 for the Groschlag family and remained a significant property in the region for many years. Multiple changes of ownership eventually led to its complete demolition in 1857.
The name comes from a noble family that shaped the estate for generations. Today, the preserved garden sections reflect the refined tastes of its former inhabitants.
The site today contains private homes, modern playgrounds, and walking paths threaded through the area. Preserved sections of the historical garden are accessible for casual strolls and exploration.
After demolition, the castle's valuable library was divided and dispersed to institutions in Darmstadt and Frankfurt. This separation of the collection reflects how much the books were valued by scholars of that time.
