Princely Treasury Thurn und Taxis, Museum collection inside St. Emmeram's Palace, Regensburg, Germany
The Princely Treasury Thurn und Taxis is a collection of European craftsmanship displayed inside St. Emmeram's Palace, featuring furniture, porcelain, tobacco boxes, and precious metal objects arranged in neo-classical rooms. The exhibition presents both practical everyday items and elaborate decorative pieces spanning different periods and artistic styles.
The collection began when Bavaria acquired over 2,200 artworks from the Thurn und Taxis family in 1993, with the exhibition opening in 1998 at St. Emmeram's Palace. This treasury documents centuries of European craftsmanship and shows the family's influence on the region's cultural development.
The collection features objects from leading European workshops that reflect how the Thurn und Taxis family displayed their wealth and taste after settling in Regensburg in 1748. Walking through, you notice how everyday luxury items like fine porcelain and decorative boxes reveal the lifestyle and values of the nobility.
The museum is housed in a multi-level palace, so comfortable shoes and some time to explore are helpful for your visit. Audio guides in several languages allow you to move at your own pace through the rooms.
The weapons room displays one of the few surviving authentic arrangements of a large rifle chamber from a European noble collection. This layout offers a rare glimpse into how such spaces actually looked and were organized centuries ago.
