Engelberg Abbey

Engelberg Abbey is a Franciscan monastery on a hillside near Großheubach that was completed in 1639. Access to the complex requires climbing 612 sandstone steps, which form a pilgrimage route decorated with 14 Baroque chapels along the way.

A wooden chapel dedicated to Saint Michael stood at this site around 1300, preceding the construction of the current stone monastery. The founding of the monastery reflects the religious movements of medieval Franconia.

The 14th-century statue of Mary is housed in a side chapel and draws visitors who come as pilgrims seeking spiritual comfort. The image holds deep meaning for people who view this place as a sacred destination for their faith.

The climb on foot is demanding and requires sturdy footwear and good balance, especially during wet or icy conditions. Once at the top, you will find a guesthouse with food and drinks plus areas to explore at your own pace.

A life-size statue of Saint Michael sculpted by Zacharias Juncker in 1635 stands within the monastery as a testament to Catholic faith during troubled times in the region. Few visitors notice this remarkable work compared to the more famous Mary statue.
