Engelberg Abbey, Franciscan monastery near Grossheubach, Germany
The monastery stands atop a hill accessed by 612 sandstone steps adorned with 14 Baroque chapels along the Engelsstaffeln pilgrimage route.
The monastery, completed in 1639, emerged from a site where a wooden chapel dedicated to Saint Michael existed around 1300.
The monastery houses a 14th-century statue of Mary, known as Gnadenbild der Freudenreichen Muttergottes, installed in a side chapel in 1701.
The monastery includes public areas and a restaurant that serves regional wines and beers produced by Franciscan monks.
The life-size statue of Saint Michael, created by sculptor Zacharias Juncker in 1635, represents Catholic faith during Franconian conflicts.
