Schloss Schwarzenraben

Schloss Schwarzenraben is a water-surrounded Baroque castle in Lippstadt featuring symmetrical facades and elaborate stucco work throughout its rooms. The three-story structure displays painted ceilings and represents the architectural style favored by nobility during the mid-1700s.

This castle was built between 1748 and 1765 under architect Johann Matthias Kitz for the Hoerde noble family. The completed structure became a symbol of the region's aristocratic power during the height of Baroque building activity.

The chapel inside reflects the religious importance of the family who lived here, with its ornate interior details visible to visitors exploring the building. The space shows how faith and status were expressed through architectural choices during the 1700s.

The castle grounds can be explored from the outside, with access to the surrounding park for visitors. Parking is available near the main entrance for those arriving by car.

A fire in 1935 sparked by a forgotten iron prompted the region to adopt stricter fire safety measures. This incident became a turning point for how buildings in Westphalia approached fire prevention afterward.
