Marienkirche, Gothic church in Röbel, Germany.
Marienkirche in Röbel is a brick hall church of two bays with a straight-ended two-bay choir and a square west tower rebuilt in 1849–1853 to a height of 58 metres. The nave is divided by buttresses and two window bays per side, and its stepped portal carries a Crucifixion group. The choir is covered by a domed cross-ribbed vault with round ribs, while the nave has star vaults on rectangular piers.
A stone church was begun in the first half of the 13th century and consecrated in 1227, its size matching today's choir, entered through a priest's door. After the archdeaconries were fixed around 1340, the nave was added; choir and sacristy were vaulted in the first half of the 14th century, the nave vaults in the 15th. A storm surge in 1714 washed away part of the church hill and undermined the foundations, so buttresses had to be built.
The church's name refers to Mary, and the building stands on a hill above the Müritz where a Slavic sanctuary is thought to have preceded it. Outside the walls, facing the main street, a two-part memorial honours the dead of both world wars: an obelisk with a Celtic cross by Wilhelm Wandschneider, commissioned in 1922 and dedicated in 1928, and a smaller monument added in 2010 at the initiative of Wilhelm Kappel and Röbel citizens.
The church stands on a hill above the shore of the Müritz, and part of that hill was washed away in the 1714 storm surge, so the choir had to be secured with buttresses. The west portal is crowned by a stepped gable carrying a crucifixion group. A wall with two entrance portals, begun in 1855, encloses the churchyard.
The organ was built by Johann Jochen Schmidt and sits in a neo-Gothic case with 24 registers that were modified several times during the 1800s. These alterations reflect how musical preferences and techniques changed across generations.
