Förmitztalsperre, reservoir
The Förmitztalsperre is a reservoir in the Hof district of Upper Franconia, near the town of Schwarzenbach an der Saale. The main dam runs across the Förmitz valley and is complemented by a second, smaller dam that helps regulate the water level within the system.
The dam was completed in the 1970s and has since served to protect the region from flooding while helping to regulate the Saale River. A connected facility was built at the same time to use the stored water for generating electricity.
The reservoir is popular with anglers who fish along the banks for pike, perch, and other species. Families and walkers use the paths around the water regularly on weekends and during summer months.
Well-maintained paths run around the reservoir and are easy to walk for visitors of most ages. Nearby towns have cafes and small shops where you can pick up food and drinks before or after your visit.
The reservoir sits along a route used by migrating birds, drawing waterfowl such as swans and ducks that stop here to rest during spring and autumn. Bird watchers come regularly with binoculars to spot and record the different species passing through.
