Benediktinerkloster Heilig Kreuz

Benediktinerkloster Heilig Kreuz is a monastery complex with a church featuring Rococo architectural elements, situated at the highest point within the city walls of Donauwörth. The building combines religious function with notable architectural design.

The monastery was founded in 1040 as a convent for women and received a fragment of the True Cross from Constantinople as a founding gift. This relic shaped its identity until today.

The church displays frescos by Jacob Carl Stauder and ornate stucco work by Franz Schmuzer that richly decorate the interior. These artistic details continue to shape the appearance of the prayer space today.

The monastery church space remains active and serves as a parish church with special services. Visitors should coordinate their visit times with regular liturgical activities.

Napoleon Bonaparte stayed in the monastery rooms in 1809 during the Fifth Coalition War and issued his first campaign orders from there. This historical event connects the religious building with a moment in European military history.
