Heiligen-Geist-Kirche

The Heiligen-Geist-Kirche is a Baroque church in Barmstedt featuring a distinctive cylindrical tower and a rectangular nave with arched windows. The building merges Baroque elements with older foundations, creating a blend of architectural periods.

The building was constructed in 1717-1718 and reused the foundations of a 12th-century fieldstone church. The original tower remained, while the nave was completely redesigned in Baroque style.

The wooden barrel vault displays Old Testament scenes, while gilded paintings showing biblical stories decorate the gallery walls and can be discovered as you move through the interior.

The church is centrally located in Barmstedt and its distinctive tower makes it easy to find. Visitors should check opening hours beforehand, as regular services may affect general access.

Locals call the tower the 'Cobbler's Awl' because its slender shape resembles a pointed tool. In 1842, when the tower was encased in bricks, this created an unusually narrow entrance area that remains today.
