Waterloosäule, Victory column at Waterlooplatz, Hannover, Germany
The Waterloo Column is a tall monument topped with a copper statue that stands on Waterlooplatz in Hannover. The structure has a slender, upright design and is surrounded at its base by plaques and commemorative elements.
The monument was built to honor a military victory against Napoleon involving soldiers from multiple nations. The statue at the top was added afterward and carries the imagery of a Roman goddess of victory.
The monument takes its name from a historic battle and displays inscriptions for fallen soldiers at its base. Visitors see how this place preserves a city's connection to a major military event through sculpture and remembrance.
An internal staircase allows visitors to climb up to an observation platform inside the structure. The building is not always open, so check ahead to confirm access is available before you visit.
The copper statue at the top was commissioned by a British duke and required a substantial amount of copper for its creation. This detail reveals the international importance and effort that went into creating this memorial.
