St. Gotthardt church Brandenburg

St. Gotthardt church Brandenburg, Gothic church in Altstadt, Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany.

St. Gotthardt is a three-aisle Gothic church with a western tower from the 12th century that blends Romanesque and Gothic elements. The structure features a thoughtfully arranged interior that reflects multiple architectural periods.

The church was founded in 1456 and named after Bishop Godehard von Hildesheim, establishing it as a medieval religious landmark. The 12th-century western tower indicates the site held importance long before its official founding.

The sandstone pulpit created by Georg Zimmermann in 1623 demonstrates the craftsmanship of that era. The late-Gothic carvings from 1500 reflect an earlier artistic period and show how styles changed over the centuries.

The church is open to visitors during daylight hours, with schedules varying by season. Check current opening times before your visit, as they differ between summer and winter.

The church houses the first Reformation altar in Mark Brandenburg, installed in 1559 with multiple panels showing different stages of this movement. Each panel tells a different story of this transformative religious shift.
