RIAS-Sender Hof, Radio transmitter in Hof, Germany
RIAS-Sender Hof was a broadcasting facility with two 100-meter-high masts positioned near the German border. The installation used different frequencies depending on the time of day to optimize signal distribution.
The facility was established in 1948 and served as a Western RIAS radio transmitter until 1993. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was demolished in 1994 through controlled demolition.
The station served as a voice for Western information and entertainment, broadcasting news, music, and reports daily to listeners across the border. It represented a form of cultural connection despite the political division.
The site is located near the former inner-German border and today is only accessible through archaeological traces. Visitors should be aware that very few visible remains of the facility exist today.
Both masts were destroyed simultaneously through coordinated explosions on October 19, 1994, a rare example of dismantling division symbols. This controlled demolition event remains part of the region's memory to this day.
