Uchter Moor, Protected natural area in Lower Saxony, Germany.
Uchter Moor is a protected wetland area in Lower Saxony covering peat bogs and meadows across several municipalities. The landscape consists of boggy terrain, shallow water areas, and open grassland that form a mosaic of natural habitats.
The area gained protected status in 2007 to conserve the moorland and wildlife populations. This followed the cessation of peat extraction that had previously shaped the landscape.
The region serves as a crucial breeding ground for over 100 pairs of nightjars, along with cranes, curlews, snipes, and northern harriers.
The moorland is accessible via marked walking paths with information signs explaining the natural features. Spring through autumn is the best visiting season when the ground is more passable and wildlife activity peaks.
Since peat extraction ceased, the area has been systematically rewetted to restore its natural bog characteristics. This restoration process demonstrates how degraded landscapes can be brought back to life.
