Gesamtanlage Altstadt und Frankfurter Vorstadt, Medieval heritage complex in Limburg, Germany
The Gesamtanlage Altstadt and Frankfurter Vorstadt is a building complex on both sides of Frankfurt Street between Grabenstrasse and Schiede in Limburg. The complex shows numerous architectural changes from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Hammer Gate near Frankfurt Street 7 once led to the former Frankfurt suburb, which became known as the Hammer or Frankfurt district during the Middle Ages. This gate was an important access point to a growing district outside the old town.
The old town preserves three original half-timbered houses from early times at positions 20/22, 21 and 24, showing how people built back then. You can still see the craftsmanship from that era in these buildings.
The Schiede tunnel from the 1970s now separates this area spatially, creating a distinct district within the old town. The tunnel affects how visitors experience and move through the complex.
In the 14th century, the area contained rest houses and blacksmith workshops that served travelers and merchants on the trade route. This infrastructure was key to the district developing as a trading hub.
