Schloss, Medieval castle in Schonungen, Germany
The castle stands on a hill overlooking the Main River bend, 4 kilometers east of Schweinfurt's city center in Bavaria.
Built between 900-1000 AD as a defensive tower, the castle first appeared in records in 1245 under the ownership of Count von Wildberg.
Wilhelm Sattler restored the castle in 1822, incorporating a substantial art collection that went to auction in 1901.
The castle resides within the Mainberger Schlossberg wine region, where various white and red grape varieties grow in the Franconian wine territory.
Ernst Sachs acquired the property in 1915 and transformed the interior spaces, creating an example of complete historical architectural design.
