Gymnasialkirche Meppen, Baroque church at Gymnasialstraße, Meppen, Germany
Gymnasialkirche Meppen is a baroque church constructed from red brick with sculptures adorning its facade and bearing the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Clemens August of Bavaria. The building forms an integrated complex with the adjacent Windthorst-Gymnasium, sharing the same street block at Gymnasialstraße 3.
Construction took place between 1743 and 1746 as part of a Jesuit monastery complex in the city. During the Seven Years War, it functioned as a military hospital, which helped preserve it through that period.
The church interior contains a high altar from 1755 displaying the Assumption of Mary and a statue of Aloysius Gonzaga between columns.
The church is located at Gymnasialstraße 3 in Meppen and its exterior can be viewed at any time. The surrounding area is accessible on foot, and parking is available nearby in the city center.
The facade displays the Latin inscription 'EGO SUM VITIS' placed beneath a 1930 Christ figure on the building. This phrase means 'I am the vine' and references a biblical passage that describes the spiritual connection between Christ and believers.
