The Görlitz Department Store is a five-story building with a metal frame structure and a glass-covered atrium illuminated by decorative chandeliers. The space unfolds across multiple levels with open gallery areas that display Art Nouveau architectural characteristics.
The building was constructed in 1913 and replaced the Golden Ostrich hotel that previously stood on the site. Its design drew from principles established by Berlin's Wertheim department store and was shaped by architect Carl Schmann.
The department store served as a filming location for an Academy Award-winning film, transforming its interior into a 1930s hotel setting. This cinematic role brought international recognition and placed the building at the center of contemporary cultural attention.
