Haseldorfer Binnenelbe mit Elbvorland

Haseldorfer Binnenelbe mit Elbvorland is a protected area spanning over 2,000 hectares along the Elbe River, with freshwater mudflats, channels, small islands, and wet banks creating a varied landscape. These different areas form a mosaic of habitats that support many forms of life.

The reserve was officially designated as a protected nature area in 1984, giving it legal protection. Flood defense measures taken in 1975 had already transformed the water conditions and created new habitats in the landscape.

The visitor center shows exhibitions about local wildlife and the importance of the wetlands as a home for birds and other animals. Visitors experience firsthand how water and land meet and shape life in this part of the region.

The visitor center offers information about guided tours and lectures and is open Wednesday through Saturday. Bring sturdy shoes since the ground is often wet and muddy throughout the area.

The area contains freshwater habitats that are influenced by North Sea tides even though saltwater does not enter the system. This blend of river and tidal forces creates a rare ecosystem in the region.
