Haseldorfer Binnenelbe mit Elbvorland is a protected area spanning over 2,000 hectares along the Elbe River, with freshwater mudflats, channels, small islands, and wet banks creating a varied landscape. These different areas form a mosaic of habitats that support many forms of life.
The reserve was officially designated as a protected nature area in 1984, giving it legal protection. Flood defense measures taken in 1975 had already transformed the water conditions and created new habitats in the landscape.
The reserve lies in the Wedel-Haseldorfer Marsch and is one of Schleswig-Holstein's largest protected areas, covering about 2,160 hectares along roughly 15 kilometres of the Elbe up to the Pinnaumündung. It is a resting and breeding ground for birds of the Unterelbe, and maintenance and development work has been carried out for years on the basis of expert reports.
The visitor center offers information about guided tours and lectures and is open Wednesday through Saturday. Bring sturdy shoes since the ground is often wet and muddy throughout the area.
The reserve lies within the FFH area DE-2323-392 Schleswig-Holsteinisches Elbästuar and the EU bird sanctuary DE-2323-401 Unterelbe bis Wedel, both part of the Natura 2000 network. These two protected areas are considerably larger than the reserve itself.
