Schloss Unterbaar, Heritage château in Baar, Germany.

Schloss Unterbaar is a three-story water castle with four polygonal bay windows at each corner, standing on a small island. A bridge across the moat leads to the main entrance, which is topped by a segmental arched canopy and displays the Himmelsbach family coat of arms.

Michael Riederer built the castle on an island during the 16th century, and the Schenk von Castell brothers undertook extensive renovations in the 18th century. These works shaped the castle's current form.

The castle served as a retirement home for people displaced from eastern territories after 1945, reflecting its evolving role in society. This use shows how noble estates adapted their purpose over different periods.

Access to the castle is via the bridge, the sole connection to the island, so allow enough time to explore the grounds. When visiting, stay on the designated paths and be mindful of the water surroundings.

The castle grounds contain one of Germany's oldest privately owned breweries, founded in 1608 and still operational today. This represents a rare example of continuous brewing tradition preserved in one location.
