Mandlachsee, reservoir
Mandlachsee is a reservoir near Handzell and Pottmes in Bavaria that serves as a recreation area for swimmers and nature lovers. The reservoir features a small sandy beach, a bathing island for children, and is equipped with changing rooms, showers, restrooms, grassy areas for lying down, and a playground.
The reservoir was created between 1970 and 1972 as part of land consolidation work in Handzell, a district of Pottmes. The Obermuhlen Stream was dammed to form the reservoir, fundamentally changing the landscape of the area.
This reservoir is a gathering place where families and friends spend time together in nature. The water and meadows are used by visitors for swimming, grilling, or simply lying in the sun while enjoying the quiet setting.
The reservoir is easily accessible via State Road 2035 between Augsburg and Neuburg, and has a parking lot right by the water. The access to the water is flat and easy to manage, making it comfortable for families with small children to visit.
In 2015, an artist installed a transparent curtain filled with trash and a trash bin wearing a T-shirt at the reservoir to draw attention to nature protection. The installation featured a quote about the importance of environmental protection and raised awareness among many visitors about environmental consciousness.
