Leopold-Mozart-Haus, Historic museum in Augsburg, Germany.
The Leopold-Mozart-Haus at Frauentorstraße 30 is a three-storey craftsman's house of the 17th century with a curved gable, painted deep red with white stone trim. Its asymmetric facade has a small round window near the gable peak, two small square windows in a recessed upper section and a projecting bay with a central column of larger windows. Gold lettering reads "Mozarthaus"; a double door with glazing sits beside a ground-floor window.
The house is a 17th-century craftsman's dwelling where Leopold Mozart was born in 1719. A memorial and exhibition on the Mozart family in Augsburg has occupied it since 1937; it was called Mozarthaus Augsburg until 2018. Closed from 1 October 2018, it reopened on 7 March 2020 under the name Leopold-Mozart-Haus with a new permanent exhibition, timed to Leopold's 300th birthday in 2019. The German Mozart Society is based in the building.
Since 2020 the eleven themed rooms take Leopold Mozart's letters as their starting point, presenting him as a person rather than a footnote to his son. Visitors can try violins, use composing dice and step inside a walkable travelling coach; a baroque room theatre and listening stations carry 18th-century music. The German Mozart Society is based in the house.
The museum is at Frauentorstraße 30 in the Bleich und Pfärrle district, in a three-storey craftsman's house with a curved gable. The entrance is the glazed double door beneath the gold "Mozarthaus" lettering. Inside, eleven themed rooms follow Leopold Mozart's letters, with a walk-in carriage, a baroque room theatre, composing dice and violins to try.
The museum's centrepiece is a hammer piano from 1785 built in Johann Andreas Stein's workshop, which both Leopold and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played. Wolfgang wrote enthusiastically about the maker's instruments in a letter. Since the 2020 reopening, visitors can try out violins themselves and walk through a coach.
