Haus Darup, Herrenhaus im Ortsteil Darup der Gemeinde Nottuln, Kreis Coesfeld
Haus Darup is a manor house in Nottuln in North Rhine-Westphalia surrounded by water-filled ditches and showing stone walls from several centuries. Alongside the main building stand outbuildings such as stables and farm structures on the estate grounds.
The building was first mentioned in 1315 but likely dates earlier to the Middle Ages. The visible southern section was built in the 18th century, while the water ditch in front was filled in during 1826.
The name Haus Darup comes from the village of Darup, a place name rooted in this region for centuries. The estate shows how noble families organized their daily lives and managed their lands across many generations.
The manor house can be viewed only from outside as it is privately owned and not open to the public. A wide approach road with two large gateposts from the street marks the entrance to the grounds.
Clemens Maria Franz von Bönninghausen, a former owner, was not only a landowner but also active in medicine and botany and helped establish local government structures. The water ditches surrounding the estate originally served as a defensive feature and give the building a fortress-like appearance.
