Heisterburg

The quadrilateral fort spans 0.9 hectares with an outer area of 7.4 hectares, featuring walls reaching heights of 2 meters and widths of 10 meters.

Built between 900 and 1200 CE, Heisterburg served as a strategic fortification at the northwestern end of the Deister ridge, marking boundaries between medieval regions.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered numerous artifacts including pottery, nails, and animal bones, providing insights into medieval life in Lower Saxony.

Located 330 meters above sea level, the fort maintains preserved structures with two gates featuring inward-sloping walls that narrow toward the center.

Recent geophysical surveys between 2014 and 2018 revealed evidence of iron smelting activities, suggesting industrial operations at the medieval stronghold.
