Leuchtturm Geestemole Nord, Protected cultural heritage lighthouse in Mitte district, Bremen, Germany
Leuchtturm Geestemole Nord is a red brick lighthouse standing 14 meters tall at the mouth of the Geeste River where it meets the Weser. The structure features a distinctive lantern room at the top that provided navigation signals to passing vessels in the harbor.
Built between 1912 and 1914, it replaced an earlier lighthouse from 1857 that stood much shorter at the same location. This replacement reflected the harbor's growth during a period when Bremen was expanding its maritime infrastructure.
The lighthouse takes its name from its location on the Geeste River mole, a key harbor structure that shaped Bremen's maritime identity. For visitors today, it stands as a reminder of how the city has always depended on water transport and harbor work.
The site is accessible via the waterfront promenade that runs along the Geeste, offering clear views of the river and harbor area. Walking along this path gives you a natural viewing point and a sense of how the harbor functions on a daily basis.
In August 2022, the lighthouse tilted eight degrees when the supporting mole beneath it collapsed, leading to its removal from the site. The original structure is being carefully reconstructed to return it to its exact former appearance.
