Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche, Catholic church in Halle, Germany
Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche is a modern church building with a crystalline structure featuring a low central interior space and a deeply sloping pent roof. Designed by architects Niebergall and Schaller, the building showcases exposed rafters and beams throughout its interior.
Construction of the church building began in 1990 to replace an earlier building from 1965. This rebuilding occurred during a period of religious renewal in eastern Germany following reunification.
The congregation has maintained connection to the Community of the Cross of Nails since 1988, dedicating itself to reconciliation and peacemaking. This mission shapes how the community engages with visitors and its wider city.
The building is located at Gütchenstraße 21 and welcomes visitors interested in attending regular services or community events held throughout the year. A continuous light gallery running along the entire length of the interior helps orient visitors and enhances the worship space.
The roof structure displays exposed rafters and beams that run throughout the entire worship space as a distinctive architectural feature. This open timber framework creates an unexpected blend of modernist design with traditional building materials visible to every visitor.
