Herz-Jesu-Kirche, Gothic Revival Catholic church in Geestemünde, Germany
The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is a Catholic church building in the Gothic Revival style built from red brick with distinctive architectural details of that era. Its interior has been updated over time, including a modern organ that shapes the worship space.
The building was constructed between 1910 and 1911 thanks to a major donation from an anonymous benefactor who requested its dedication to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Despite severe bombing in the city during World War II, the church remained undamaged throughout the conflict.
The church serves as the focal point for the local Catholic community and hosts weddings, baptisms, and regular worship gatherings. It shapes the spiritual and social life of the neighborhood, bringing residents together for significant moments throughout the year.
The church is centrally located in the Geestemünde neighborhood near the main train station and is easy to reach on foot. Keep in mind that access may be limited during services and private events taking place inside.
The church suffered no damage during the heavy air raids on Bremerhaven in World War II, even though much of the surrounding city was destroyed. In 1990, foundation work using concrete support was carried out to ensure its long-term stability.
