Holzbachdurchbruch, Protected gorge near Gemünden, Germany.
The Holzbach creek carved a one-kilometer gorge through basalt rock, creating steep cliff walls reaching depths of 30 meters in the Westerwald region.
The Bezirksregierung Montabaur declared Holzbachdurchbruch a protected area on December 11, 1961, replacing an earlier conservation order from November 1933.
The nature reserve contains multiple hiking paths on both sides of the creek, connecting to regional trails like the Westerwaldsteig and Grüne Steig.
The circular hiking trail R29 starts in Gemünden and extends over 3.54 kilometers, allowing visitors to explore the natural features in approximately 53 minutes.
The creek formed distinctive geological structures by cutting through volcanic basalt, creating a narrow valley with scattered rock formations and fallen trees.
