Holzbachdurchbruch

Holzbachdurchbruch is a protected nature reserve near Gemünden where a creek has cut a deep valley through basalt rock. The cliff walls frame the narrow passage and create a tight gorge with considerable vertical relief.

The area was officially protected in 1961 after earlier conservation efforts began in the 1930s. This long tradition of protection shows early recognition of the ecological value of this location.

The protected area is known among hikers for its connection to larger regional trails that link the gorge with the surrounding landscape. Visitors experience the formation through multiple paths on both sides of the watercourse.

The area is accessible via a hiking trail that starts in Gemünden and forms a complete loop. The path guides visitors through the valley and offers good views of the formations from several vantage points.

The watercourse has left rocks of varying sizes and fallen trees over time, giving the gorge a wild appearance. These natural details shape the place more than smooth cliff faces do.
