Burg

Burg is a castle ruin located on elevated ground near the Wern river, positioned above Gössenheim. Stone walls and defensive structures from the medieval period are still visible, showing the original fortification layout.

The site was built around 1170 by the Lords of Hohenberg and later became part of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg in 1469. This transfer of ownership altered the political importance of the location in the region.

The castle has long been tied to the vineyard landscape and serves as a symbol of local identity for people living in the area. Residents and wine producers view the ruins as representing the character and heritage of their region.

Marked hiking trails from Gössenheim pass through surrounding vineyards and lead to the ruins. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended since the paths can be uneven, especially after rain.

Local wine producers have named several of their wines after the castle and feature the ruins on bottle labels. This connection between medieval history and contemporary wine production remains visible in how the region markets its products.
