Villa Zanders, Art museum in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany
Villa Zanders is an art museum in Bergisch Gladbach housed in a three-story building with roughly 1,000 square meters (10,764 sq ft) of gallery space. Rotating exhibitions and permanent displays showcase contemporary works from artists around the world.
The house was built from 1873 to 1874 for the Zanders family, wealthy paper manufacturers, in the French Renaissance style. A major renovation completed in 1992 transformed it into a public art museum.
The name comes from a paper manufacturer family, and the collection today focuses on works that often use paper as their medium, creating a quiet link to the city's industrial past. This reflects how art and local heritage intertwine in the space.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday with guided tours and workshops available for visitors. Reduced rates apply for students, seniors, and local residents, so it's worth asking when you arrive.
The Artothek section operates as a public lending library with around 1,700 graphics and photographs that visitors can borrow, making it one of Germany's largest art lending institutions. This lets people take artworks home with them rather than just viewing them in the gallery.
