Drachensee, reservoir in Bavaria, Germany
Drachensee is a reservoir near Furth im Wald that covers about 175 hectares and has been open to visitors since May 2009. The area is divided into four zones: sections for leisure activities, water sports, nature protection, and environmental education, with a natural ecological area reserved for undisturbed plant and animal development.
The reservoir was created to store water and protect the region from flooding. The site became accessible to the public in 2009 and has since combined its original function with use as a recreation and nature conservation area.
The lake takes its name from the local legend of the 'Further Drachenstich', a dragon play that has been performed in the region for centuries. This story still shapes the city's identity today and is reflected in artworks like the 'Mythos Drache' sculpture that visitors find along the shore.
Paths of about 5 km wind around the lake and are suitable for walking, cycling, and Nordic walking, accessible to visitors of all abilities. A bathing area with sunbathing meadow, sanitary facilities, and a kiosk invite visitors to linger, while various water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, and stand-up paddling are available.
Migratory birds use the lake as an important stopover on their migration routes, especially during spring and autumn transitions. Visitors can observe various bird species in their natural habitat from special observation points and learn more about their behaviors.
