Talsperre Pöhl

Talsperre Pöhl is a reservoir in Vogtlandkreis, Saxony, and ranks among the three largest water bodies in the state. The water surface sits at 370 meters (1,214 feet) elevation, surrounded by wooded mountains and gentle hills.

The dam was built between 1958 and 1964 and rises nearly 48 meters (157 feet) above the valley floor. During construction the old village of Pöhl disappeared beneath the rising waters of the new reservoir.

Sailors and triathletes gather here each year for competitions on the water. Hikers and cyclists use the shoreline trails that wind through forested slopes and open meadows.

Visitors can swim, sail and dive, but motorboats are not allowed on the reservoir. The shoreline areas offer access to the water, and hiking trails run along the entire perimeter.

When water levels drop, the foundation walls of the sunken village of Pöhl become visible, the settlement that gave the reservoir its name. Divers explore the remains of old buildings that have rested underwater for more than half a century.
