Hildenburg

Hildenburg sits on a cone-shaped mountain in the Rhön range and is surrounded by beech forests. The remains show parts of the keep and foundation walls that are reachable by stone paths.

The castle likely arose in the 8th or 9th century and passed into the hands of various noble families. It was destroyed during a peasant uprising in 1525.

The castle's name comes from a noblewoman who made donations to Fulda Abbey around 824. Visitors today can trace the connection between this place and that early medieval female figure.

The mountain location requires sturdy shoes and careful footing on uneven paths. Visitors should allow time to explore, as some ways around the ruins can be steep.
