Oppidum Finsterlohr, Celtic settlement in Creglingen, Germany
Oppidum Finsterlohr is a fortified Celtic settlement in the Creglingen region along the slopes of the Tauber Valley. The site spreads across a large area and displays remains of defensive structures made from earth, wood, and stone.
The fortified settlement dates to the 2nd to 1st century BCE and served as a key regional center during the La Tene period. It played a central role in the network of communities across the area.
A reconstructed Celtic house and entrance gate show how settlers of that time built and lived here. These recreations help visitors understand the construction methods and materials that Celtic communities relied on.
An educational trail of about 2.5 kilometers with six stations guides visitors through the site with informative panels on Celtic history. The path is suitable for walking, and visitors should allow time to read the detailed information at each stop.
Beneath the surface lie settlement remains that archaeological investigations have uncovered, though continuous farming has shaped the landscape significantly. These hidden layers reveal additional stories about daily life in this ancient community.
