Castle Pfaffroda, Cultural heritage château in Pfaffroda, Saxony, Germany.
Castle Pfaffroda is a stone fortress in Saxony's Erzgebirge region, sitting at roughly 540 meters above the valley below. The building shows different building styles from various periods, visible in its walls and towers.
The castle began in medieval times as a fortification and changed hands and purposes many times over the centuries. It has belonged to the municipality of Olbernhau since 2017 and is now preserved as a heritage monument.
The castle served as the seat of local power for centuries and shaped how people in the region lived together. Today visitors can see in the rooms how the family lived and managed their estates.
Access is on foot via a walking path through the landscape with some uphill sections. Good footwear is recommended and visitors should allow time for the climb.
From the castle you can see far into the neighboring mountain valleys and understand why this location was so strategically valuable. The wide view over the region was a key reason why the fortress was built exactly here.
