Hohler Stein

Hohler Stein is a natural cave near Schambach featuring two interconnected chambers of different sizes. The upper chamber provides more open space while the lower chamber remains more confined and narrow.

The cave holds evidence of human habitation stretching across multiple millennia. Early excavations revealed artifacts and bone remains from different periods of occupation.

The site contains evidence of Neanderthal occupation from 120,000 years ago, with continuous settlement patterns extending through Roman and medieval periods.

The cave entrance is clearly visible and sits partway up a forested slope. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as access requires walking through woodland terrain.

Stone tools and bones from Ice Age hunters and prey animals were discovered within the cave, offering a window into how early people used this shelter. These finds reveal the site as both a refuge and a hunting camp from thousands of years ago.
