Schloss Tambach, Baroque château in Weitramsdorf, Bavaria, Germany
Schloss Tambach is a three-winged baroque palace west of Weitramsdorf, 11 km from Coburg. Its more than 100-metre-long central wing has three storeys, a central risalit divided by six pilasters, and a triangular gable; the roof ridge carries a slender lantern-like cupola with an onion dome and a golden cross. The side wings face the garden rather than forming a cour d'honneur, and the courtyard holds an oval fountain basin.
A Cistercian monastery court with carp ponds existed here from the early 12th century; Tambach was first mentioned in 1156 and became a monastery office in the 13th century. After destruction in the Peasants' War and the Thirty Years' War, Abbot Gallus Knauer began rebuilding it as a Baroque palace at the end of the 17th century. The east wing was completed in 1698, the central and west wings in 1777–1786. In 1805 the Ortenburg counts exchanged their county for Tambach and have owned it since 1806.
The name Tambach first appears in a document in 1156. The Cistercian monks of Langheim kept carp in a chain of ponds beside the monastery courtyard, and these ponds still exist. Today the 50-hectare castle park is laid out as a wildlife reserve with a hunting and fishing museum, and summer concerts and a Christmas market are held in the castle courtyard.
The grounds are accessible year-round and visitors can walk around the castle on marked paths and explore the exterior. Before visiting, check when guided tours are offered, as these provide the best way to see the interior.
The courtyard's two baroque fountains with figures by Bamberg sculptor Michael Trautmann were removed after the Ortenburg counts moved in, replaced by an oval water basin with a fountain jet. The counts also added the western Heinrichstor in 1910, a counterpart to the eastern gate of 1698, crowned by a cartouche with an inscription panel and the Ortenburg coat of arms.
