Untere Burg, Medieval castle ruin in Rheinbreitbach, Germany

Untere Burg is a castle ruin in Rheinbreitbach with foundation walls rising about one meter high, positioned next to Saint Maria Magdalena Church. The site displays restored stonework and traces of a medieval moat surrounding the former stronghold.

The castle served as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Breitbach until 1473, when they relocated to Bürresheim Castle near Mayen. This move marked the end of their presence at the original location.

The ruins sit within Renesse-Platz, a park named after Count Clemens Wenzeslaus von Renesse who purchased the land in 1797 and shaped its fate. The location remains a gathering point where locals and visitors connect with the town's layered past.

The site sits along Westerwaldstraße in central Rheinbreitbach and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors can examine the foundation walls and moat reconstruction freely, making it simple to explore at their own pace without special equipment.

Until the 1960s, the structure retained a four-story southern wing with cross-ribbed vaults before demolition removed it due to deterioration. This loss reveals how dramatically the ruin changed over recent decades.
