Schloss Randegg, Medieval castle in Gottmadingen, Germany.
Schloss Randegg is a three-story stone castle located on a hilltop at the western edge of Gottmadingen, featuring three corner towers and a mansard roof. The structure combines medieval elements with later additions that shape its overall appearance.
The castle was first documented in 1214 and suffered severe destruction during its history, particularly in 1639 when Swedish troops attacked during the Thirty Years' War. After this assault, it was later rebuilt and continued to change over subsequent centuries.
The castle served as a gathering place for artists and scholars over the centuries, a tradition still visible in how it functions today. Art collections displayed throughout the rooms shape how visitors experience the space.
The castle has been privately owned since 1923 and is partially accessible to visitors, with art exhibitions displayed year-round. Plan time to explore the exhibition spaces and take advantage of the hilltop location to view the surrounding landscape.
German painter Otto Dix sought refuge in this castle from 1933 to 1936 before later designing stained glass windows for its chapel in 1963. This connection to a major 20th-century artist gives the place a distinctive creative history.
