Irsingener See, reservoir in Germany
The Irsingener See is a large reservoir near Bad Wörishofen held back by a dam on the Wertach River, stretching for just over a kilometer. Paths circle the water, and a sailing club sits on the western shore with boats moored along the docks.
The reservoir system was completed in the early 1960s to generate electricity and manage water flow for flood protection. Since its completion in 1964, the dam with two power turbines has shaped the landscape and supplied nearby towns with energy.
The lake is also called Bad Wörishofener Stausee, connecting it to the nearby spa town known for health and relaxation traditions. This name reflects how the water has become woven into local identity and draws visitors seeking peace.
The paths around the lake are well marked and suitable for walkers and cyclists of all skill levels. The best starting points for walks are accessible from parking areas, and there are plenty of open spaces for sitting or picnicking.
Since 2011, a fish ladder beside the dam helps fish travel upstream past the barrier to support local fish populations. This structure demonstrates efforts to balance nature's needs with energy production.
