Kniepertor, Medieval city gate in Stralsund, Germany.
The Kniepertor is a medieval city gate in Stralsund built from red brick with a low profile and distinctive form. The passage features a pointed arch vault typical of northern German brick construction from the medieval period.
The gate appears in written records from 1293 and was one of ten city gates protecting Stralsund's medieval defenses. It survived sieges and wars, remaining to this day as evidence of the city's medieval fortifications.
The gate takes its name from a wealthy merchant family that shaped Stralsund for generations. It shows how the city honored local powers through the names given to its main entrances.
The gate is located on Knieperstraße and easily accessible on foot from the city's Old Market district. The surrounding area is easy to navigate and provides access to historic neighborhoods and local shops.
A memorial plaque on the city-facing side honors Friedrich Gustav von Petersson. It marks his service alongside Ferdinand von Schill during the liberation wars of the early 19th century.
