Johanneskirche Crailsheim

Johanneskirche Crailsheim, Gothic church building in Crailsheim, Germany.

Description

The Johanneskirche is a Gothic church building in Crailsheim that stands out for its three prominent towers shaping the skyline of the city center and the Kreuzberg district. The structure features the hallmarks of late medieval architecture with pointed arches and decorative stone work throughout its facade.

History

Construction of the church began in 1398 and initially used stones from an earlier Romanesque predecessor until the building was completed in 1440. This extended construction period spanning several decades shows how the project progressed through multiple phases.

Culture

The high altar displays paintings of John the Baptist and the Passion of Christ that were created in Michael Wolgemut's workshop. These artworks represent some of the most important treasures visitors can see inside the church.

Practical

The best starting point for a visit is Crailsheim's city center, from where the church is easily reachable on foot. For visitors arriving by car, parking options are available in the surrounding area near the city center.

Did you know?

Wall paintings from the 15th century depicting the legend of three living and three dead were discovered above the north portal in 1967. These historically important works reveal how much of the original decoration was hidden beneath plaster over the centuries.
