Johanneskirche, Lutheran church in Giessen, Germany
Johanneskirche is a church building in central Giessen, featuring dark stone walls contrasted by light sandstone bands. The tall church tower is one of the most distinctive architectural features of the city skyline.
Construction started in 1891 and the building was formally inaugurated in 1893. The church emerged during a period of city expansion and has shaped the urban landscape since then.
The church features six stained glass windows created between 1960 and 1965 by Erhardt Klonk, depicting scenes from the Book of Revelation.
The church opens its doors for visitors on Saturdays during summer months. It is best explored during quieter hours when fewer people are present.
Inside stands a large organ from the 1890s that was restored and continues to be used for concerts and services. It remains one of the city's most important instruments of its kind.
