Jodbad Sulzbrunn, Historic iodine bath in Sulzberg, Germany

Jodbad Sulzbrunn is a historic thermal bath facility in southern Allgäu that harnesses multiple natural mineral springs. The site comprises bath buildings, spring sources with varying water compositions, and water access systems built into the landscape.

The springs were recognized as healing waters in the 11th century and documented in religious records. The site developed into a popular spa destination during the 19th and 20th centuries with growing facilities and visitor interest.

The name comes from the iodine-rich springs that emerge from the ground and tint the water yellow. Visitors can observe the historic bath structures that reflect how people once came here seeking healing properties.

The site sits on a hillside and is accessible on foot with sturdy shoes recommended for the terrain. The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn when the grounds are fully accessible and weather conditions are favorable.

Inside the tunnels grow rare bacterial formations called Snottites that survive without sunlight using methane and iodine as energy sources. These microscopic structures were a surprising discovery that scientists identified only recently.
