Cologne Prison

The prison complex consists of multiple detention buildings connected by corridors, with administrative sections, church, and library forming the central area.

The foundation stone for the new prison was laid in November 1961, replacing a previous facility with grounds ten times larger than the old city center location.

The institution implements the 'Knastkultur' program, enabling inmates to participate in music, art, literature, and theater activities within the prison walls.

The facility maintains 1,171 detention spaces, including 37 places in an external section for women in open detention, along with exercise yards and workshop buildings.

The prison walls stretch 1.3 kilometers, standing 5 meters tall inside and 4.5 meters outside, integrating into the residential area through strategic landscaping.
