Schloss Gartrop

Schloss Gartrop is a baroque castle in Hünxe featuring three wings arranged around a central courtyard and surrounded by moats. The estate is completed by entrance structures, gateways, and an old water mill on the grounds.

The original fortification dates back to the 13th century when the Knights of Gardapen first built on this site. Major baroque renovations transformed the castle into its present form by the year 1675.

The baroque ceremonial hall on the ground floor features ornate stucco ceilings and specialized wall treatments designed for grand occasions. These rooms reflect how nobility displayed wealth and status through elaborate interior design.

The castle now operates as a four-star hotel with 22 rooms, and various areas can accommodate larger events and conferences. A restaurant on the grounds serves regional cuisine, making it suitable for both lodging and celebrations.

Two sandstone sculptures depicting the goddesses Athena and Concordia stand guard at the entrance gate, symbolizing wisdom and harmony for the estate. These classical statues date to the baroque renovation period and blend ancient ideals with period concepts of power and order.
