Jüdischer Friedhof Unkel, Jewish cemetery in Unkel, Germany

The Jüdischer Friedhof Unkel is a Jewish cemetery in Unkel, a small town in Rhineland-Palatinate in western Germany, and has been protected as a cultural heritage monument since 1988. The site lies at the corner of Am Hohen Weg and Simon-Levy-Strasse, and eight original gravestones with Hebrew and German inscriptions remain in place today.

The land was bought in April 1877, and the first burial took place in August 1879, replacing the older practice of burying the dead in towns like Linz or Bad Honnef. During the Nazi period, the gravestones were removed in August 1941 and thrown into a gravel pit, but eight of them were later recovered and put back after the war.

Visitors can notice the Jewish tradition of placing small stones on graves rather than flowers, a practice visible on several of the markers here. This custom is a way of showing lasting remembrance, and it sets the site apart from most other cemeteries in the area.

The cemetery is freely accessible and a sign at the entrance, installed in 2016, helps visitors find and understand the site. As it is a small and open space with no guided services, a brief and respectful visit is all that is needed.

Before this cemetery opened, the Jewish community of Unkel had to bury their dead in neighboring towns such as Linz or Bad Honnef. After the gravestones were thrown into a gravel pit in 1941, only eight were ever recovered, so the visible markers today represent just a fraction of all those once buried here.
