Jüdischer Friedhof, Jewish cemetery in Schmieheim, Germany
The cemetery contains over 2,500 gravestones spread across 140 acres of land, making it the largest Jewish burial ground in Southern Baden.
Established in 1682 by the Jewish community of Ettenheim, the cemetery holds gravestones dating from 1701 and served multiple communities until its closure in 1941.
The cemetery grounds include traditional Jewish burial markers with Hebrew inscriptions and symbols representing different family lineages and religious positions.
Regular guided tours of the cemetery teach visitors about Jewish funeral customs and provide information about the families buried within its grounds.
A memorial service in September 2019 marked the first religious ceremony at the cemetery since 1940, with prayers led by rabbis and community attendance.
