Kaserne Übigau, Military barracks in Übigau district, Dresden, Germany
Kaserne Ubigau is a military complex in the Ubigau district of Dresden with several buildings along Washington Street, Scharfenberger Street, Klinger Street, and Werft Street. The buildings have been partly converted into apartments, with about 120 units created while preserving protected historical elements.
The complex was built in 1913 as an airship station and later housed Telegraph Battalion No. 7 during World War I. After the war, Soviet forces used the barracks until their withdrawal in 1992.
The preserved military structures show early 20th-century design with red brick facades and functional layouts that still shape the neighborhood. These buildings tell through their form of the practical needs of military operations of that era.
The site is located in northwest Dresden and is today partly accessible to the public, as sections have been converted into apartments. Visitors should keep in mind it remains a former military grounds where private residences exist and not all areas are freely open for walking.
The Telegraph Battalion stationed here managed critical military communications at a time before modern telecommunications technology existed. These early communication specialists played a key role in coordinating army operations.
