Castra of Hofheim

The Castra of Hofheim is a Roman military fort with preserved wall remains and foundations showing how soldiers constructed their defenses. The compound is laid out in a rectangular plan with traces of buildings that once stood within its perimeter.

The fort was built in the 1st century as part of Rome's frontier defense against Germanic peoples. It was damaged and rebuilt several times before eventually being abandoned.

This fort served as a distant outpost where Roman soldiers lived and worked far from home. The excavations reveal how these men spent their daily lives and what objects they used.

The remains are located at an easily accessible spot where visitors can see the foundation lines and wall traces. It helps to bring a map or guide to understand the layout of the different areas.

The fort displays a highly regular design with parallel streets and building rows that was copied for hundreds of similar installations across Europe. This standardized system allowed the Roman army to quickly create the same structure anywhere.
